Self extracting Zip Files

October 6th, 2005 by | Print

I’ve been playing around with ZipCentral with a view to start releasing some of the effects that contain several pictures, as one self executing zip file. Hopefully this will make the download and installation of the files far simpler

I,ll start making these available shortly. This is what you can expect to see:

This is the icon for the .exe file

..and this is what you see when you double click it:

The .exe file, when executed, will place the xml files in the AddOnTFX folder ( C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX )

A folder will also be placed in the AddOnTFX folder containing all the PNG images and any readme text documents

DON’T FORGET TO RESTART MOVIE MAKER 2 FOR THE EFFECTS TO APPEAR !

There is no automatic uninstall function to remove the downloaded effects. It must be done maually instead by locating the xml file that appears in the zip central window above on your hard drive and then removing it. All of the custom xml files are installed in this folder :

C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\shared\AddOnTFX

So for example – if we wished to remove the above effect we would locate “BFXSaturn.xml” in this folder location: C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\shared\AddOnTFX and then simply delete it. This will remove the effect. Harmless images will be left over but these can also be located within the same folder and deleted if you wish.

Problems might occur if the main system drive is not the “C” drive. If a users operating system is installed for example on the “F” drive, you would need to alter the default extract location to reflect this. For example: C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\…..would become F:\Program Files\Movie Maker\…..

The above alteration can be made at the extraction stage and should work for titles (additional alterations to the xml file would be needed for transitions, effects and pip+ plugin effects). To help remove any ambiguity I will update the zip files to install in a users own unique system drive. I’ll post a message on this thread to confirm when the changes have been made – hopefully soon !
